Here is an example where additive manufacturing compliments traditional machining.
Our customer had an issue with high scrap rates when milling aluminum heat sink fins. The circular interpolation with the end mill caused the fins to be “grabbed” by the milling cutter.
The solution was to print a simple and inexpensive milling fixture to provide support for the fins during the machining operations.
The fixture uses no fasteners or adhesives and is easily removed after each operation. The interference fit firmly holds the fins in place eliminating the damage caused by milling the unsupported fins.
